Commissioned by Prof. Sílvia Araújo for the Universidade do Minho in 2022, this video essay was created for the "Échos francophones: traversées océaniques" event. The film is a creative synthesis of visual and auditory materials collected by students from the Master in Digital Humanities. It argues for a multi-layered understanding of francophony, where the sea serves as a central metaphor for cultural and linguistic crossings. The work was officially presented at a major French language congress in May 2022, showcasing the potential of digital humanities to bridge collaborative research and artistic practice.
The sound design and editing are the structural backbone of this project. By weaving together diverse field recordings and images provided by the students, I developed an immersive sonic landscape that reflects the rhythmic and fluid nature of the "oceanic crossings." The editing process involved organizing fragmented student contributions into a coherent, poetic narrative that highlights the diversity of voices within the francophone world. This video essay exemplifies how digital tools can be used to synthesize collective fieldwork into a singular, analytical, and sensorial experience.
