Developed in partnership with Miguel Costa, this ongoing documentary project tracks the creation and installation of a monumental sculpture by artist Meireles de Pinho in Vila Nova de Gaia. The monument—a stainless steel carnation spanning 8 meters—rests atop an 8-meter tubular steel structure featuring the dog tags of Portuguese soldiers from the Overseas Wars. Rather than focusing on the finished object, my work serves as a visual narrative of the "making-of," documenting the grit, the engineering, and the artistic labor involved in such a significant public intervention.
The photographic record aims to bridge the gap between industrial execution and artistic record, highlighting Meireles de Pinho’s process as he navigates the complexities of large-scale steel construction. The imagery captures the tension between the delicate symbolism of the carnation and the raw, heavy materials used to honor both the living and the fallen. This extensive documentation is being curated into a large-format book of approximately 120 pages, scheduled for publication in June 2026. The project argues for the importance of the process as a fundamental part of the monument's historical and emotional weight.
